We already know CES 2025 is going to be a big one for TVs, but with the rumored launch of HDMI 2.2, things are getting much more interesting. The HDMI Forum confirmed in an email that “next-generation HDMI” will be announced on January 6 at CES 2025 — all signs point to this being HDMI 2.

Seven years after the HDMI organisation unveiled the current 2.1 interface – which has allowed for enhanced gaming features such as 4K/120Hz gaming with VRR and ALLM (and more recently 144Hz support) – it is set to introduce the next generation of HDMI at the technology convention in Las Vegas.

Right now, the most popular standard for PC and TV video interfaces is HDMI 2.1, but we can soon expect a switch over to HDMI 2.2 — and that switch is apparently coming sooner than expected. The new HDMI 2.
