The suspension of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s powers left a seasoned but unelected prime minister in charge of a country facing daunting challenges at home and abroad.

South Korea's parliament began voting on Saturday on a second impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol over his martial law decree, with his party deciding to participate after boycotting the previous vote.

Yoon, a political novice, was impeached barely halfway through his five-year term. That makes him the shortest-serving president in South Korea’s democratic history.

South Korea’s opposition leader offered Sunday to work with the government to ease the political tumult as officials sought to reassure allies and markets, a day after the opposition-controlled parliament voted to impeach conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol over a short-lived attempt to impose martial law.

The Constitutional Court now has up to 180 days to determine whether to dismiss Yoon Suk Yeol as president or restore his powers.

The South Korean National Assembly voted on December 14 to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol after his attempt to impose martial law earlier this month. Several thousand Koreans cheered at a rally just outside the National Assembly.

The Constitutional Court will decide whether to remove Yoon sometime in the next six months. If he is removed from office, a snap election will be called.
