NASA's Ingenuity Helicopter Crash: Why did the Mars Accident Happen?
"When running an accident investigation from 100 million miles away, you don't have any black boxes!" NASA's Håvard Grip said.
NASA thinks it’s figured out why the Mars helicopter crashed
Relying on remote data, including photographs taken after the flight, the investigators believe that “navigation errors created high horizontal velocities at touchdown,” which most likely resulted in Ingenuity experiencing a “hard impact on the sand ripple’s slope,” causing it to pitch and roll.
NASA video shows its next Martian helicopter soaring over Mars
After over 70 flights, the Ingenuity helicopter — the first craft to ever make a powered, controlled flight on another planet — crashed in the Martian dunes in January 2024. But its unexpected achievement (engineers hoped it might make five flights) has prompted the conceptual design and planning for what the agency calls its "Mars Chopper."
NASA Now Knows Why Its Mars Helicopter Crashed
Imagine how much more difficult it would be to diagnose a helicopter accident that took place 69 million miles away with none of the usual data present to help. NASA had to do just that after its Ingenuity Mars Helicopter suffered an accident on Jan.

Up and over! NASA's Mars rover Perseverance reaches rim of its Jezero Crater home (video)
Perseverance reached the top of Jezero's rim at a spot the mission team calls Lookout Hill. The rover has already left that site and is rolling toward Witch Hazel Hill, an interesting outcrop about 1,500 feet (450 m) away.
Perseverance Rover Escapes Its Giant Martian Crater. Here’s What Happens Next
The rover trekked nearly 2,000 feet to get out of the crater, where it will explore a 4-billion-year-old environment.
A NASA rover just conquered a treacherous climb on Mars
The Perseverance rover has reached the top of the Jezero Crater rim on Mars, a hike that rose 1,640 feet — higher than the Empire State Building is tall. NASA mission leaders said the rover, which had embarked on the journey 3.
