The Maine CDC has identified a rabid racoon in Cape Elizabeth. It's unclear where or when that racoon was spotted but the agency is reminding folks about rabies safety, like avoiding wildlife, especially if an animal seems to be acting irregularly and get your pets vaccinated for rabies.

In a press release shared Saturday, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention says they identified a case of animal rabies in a raccoon in Cape Elizabeth. Humans can contract rabies if they're bitten or scratched by an infected animal.

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine — State health officials confirmed a case of animal rabies in Cape Elizabeth after a raccoon tested positive for the virus. The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention issued a letter to the Cape Elizabeth town manager dated Friday noting that the test results of the raccoon came back positive.
