Tropical Cyclone Chido struck southeast Africa, killing "perhaps a few thousand" in France's Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte on Saturday and then hitting Mozambique on Sunday, officials said.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Cyclone Chido left at least 11 people dead and caused widespread damage in the largely poor French island territory of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean before making landfall Sunday in Mozambique on the east coast of Africa.

The prefect of Mayotte said the death toll could climb. The storm, the equivalent of a Category 3, made landfall in Mozambique on Sunday.
