Bob Fernandez, a 100-year-old survivor of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, died shortly after deteriorating health prompted him to skip a trip to Hawaii to attend last week’s remembrance ceremony marking the 83rd anniversary of the attack.

Bob Fernandez was a 17-year-old sailor on board the USS Curtiss when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Robert Fernandez, one of the last known American survivors of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, died on Wednesday in Lodi, Calif., just days after the 83rd anniversary of the attack. He was 100. His nephew Joe Guthrie confirmed the death.

Four months later, he found himself shaking from explosions and passing ammunition to artillery crews so his ship's guns could return fire on Japanese planes bombing Pearl Harbor, a Navy base in Hawaii.

Mr. Fernandez was assigned to the mess hall on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, when he looked out a porthole and saw a Japanese warplane.
